Cash App Users Could Get Up to $2,500 This Month in $15 Million Settlement
Millions of Cash App users have been searching for answers this week: could a payment land in their account this month? For some of them, the answer is yes. Approved claimants in a $15 million settlement with Cash App could start receiving money in October 2026 — with some people getting as much as $2,500.
The payouts come from a long-running class action lawsuit over data breaches and security problems at the mobile payment app. Here is what the case is about, who qualifies, and what happens next.
What the lawsuit claimed
The lawsuit, known as Salinas v. Block, Inc. and Cash App Investing, LLC, was filed in a US federal court in California. It accused the companies behind Cash App of failing to protect users after two security incidents.
The first incident was disclosed in April 2022. A former employee of Cash App Investing accessed customer account reports without permission. The second was disclosed in October 2023, when an outside party got into some Cash App accounts that were linked to recycled phone numbers — old numbers that had been given to new owners.
The lawsuit also covered complaints about unauthorized or fraudulent withdrawals and transfers from Cash App accounts, and about how the companies handled customer complaints between August 2018 and August 2024. Block and Cash App Investing denied the claims and said they did nothing wrong. They agreed to the $15 million settlement to end the case, with a federal court giving final approval in March 2025.
Who gets the money
Not every Cash App user will see a payment. The money goes only to people whose claims were approved. To qualify, a person had to show that their personal information or account was accessed without permission, that they lost money to unauthorized transfers, or that they had unresolved problems with error handling during the covered period.
Claims had to be filed by November 18, 2024. That deadline is long closed, and no new claims are being accepted. Around 40,380 claims were approved out of more than 667,000 that were filed.
Payments depend on what each person can show. Users with documented out-of-pocket losses — such as money lost from fraudulent transactions — can receive up to $2,500. Lost time spent dealing with the breach is covered too, at $25 an hour for up to three hours.
When will the payments arrive
The official settlement website was updated in late September 2026 with the news people were waiting for: the review of claims, including appeals and corrections, is finished, and distributions to approved claimants will go out during October.
No exact date has been given. Payments are expected by bank transfer or check, depending on the option the claimant chose. People who filed a claim and want to check their status can contact the settlement administrator through the official website.
Do not confuse it with a second settlement
One point is causing confusion online. Alongside the $15 million payout, Block is also paying $45 million in a separate deal with US state attorneys general, announced in 2026. That deal settled different claims — that the company made its fraud protections sound stronger than they were while fraud on the platform was rising.
The two settlements look alike but are legally separate. The $15 million fund pays approved users from the private class action. The $45 million fund goes to state consumer protection programs — Pennsylvania alone received about $1.14 million of it.
Watch out for scams
Whenever settlement money is in the news, scammers move in. Anyone who did not file an approved claim before the 2024 deadline will not receive a payment, and no one should pay a fee to get one. The settlement administrator never asks for a bank login or a payment to release your check.
The broader lesson is worth remembering for every app that holds your money: use a strong, unique password, turn on two-step verification where it exists, and review your transactions regularly. Fraud protection on payment apps is real — but it is not unlimited.
For the roughly 40,000 approved claimants, October 2026 is finally the month the long wait ends. For everyone else, it is a reminder to protect the accounts that protect their money.
