Good evening. Here are the biggest stories shaping the world today — a major military escalation in the Middle East, a diplomatic deadlock between the United States and Iran, and a nervous crypto market. These stories matter for oil prices, shipping costs, and market mood.
Mecca defence pact activated as Saudi-led forces push into Yemen
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey have activated their collective defence commitments under the Mecca pact, agreeing to deploy military forces and capabilities rapidly. The move came as Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces launched a counteroffensive against the Houthis around the Red Sea city of Mocha and the Bab el-Mandeb strait, with about 100 coalition fighter jets providing air cover and naval forces destroying weapons depots and explosive-laden boats in Hodeidah. The Aden government claims Mocha was recaptured, but military sources stopped short of confirming it — the city is reportedly under siege. The Houthis retaliated with drone, ballistic, and cruise missile strikes on King Khalid Airport in Riyadh, the Aramco refinery in Rabigh, and military sites. With both the Red Sea and Hormuz routes under pressure, freight and insurance premiums on shipping lanes stay elevated.
Iran calls US talks “meaningless” as diplomatic deadlock deepens
Iranian President Pezeshkian said negotiations with the United States are “meaningless,” accusing Washington of attacking Iran three times after talks and saying its goal is to overthrow the Islamic Republic. His comments followed the failure of indirect talks at the UN General Assembly. At the same time, Trump said the United States remains open to talks with Iran. The diplomatic deadlock keeps the oil risk premium in place, and the United States has not struck Iran since September 1, relying on economic pressure instead.
Bitcoin slips again as the $87,000 wall holds
Bitcoin fell 1.2% to around $85,600 on Tuesday morning in Asia, marking its third rejection above $87,000 since September 23. Analysts note the market is approaching a triangle apex, with rising support and firm $87,000 resistance — a breakout in either direction could bring sharp moves. Total crypto market value stood near $2.93 trillion, under the $2.95 trillion resistance level. Ethereum traded around $2,700, down 1–2%, while most major coins slipped; Cardano stood out with an 11% gain. Traders are now watching the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes on October 7 and the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore on October 7–8.
Market snapshot
Bitcoin is near $85,600 and Ethereum around $2,700. Oil prices eased, with Brent near $100–101 and WTI near $89–90, but the war-risk premium remains. The US 10-year yield touched 5.32%, levels last seen in 2002, while the Nasdaq 100 hit a record high. No new China–UK/USA tariff moves were announced. The UK–Israel diplomatic standoff also continues, with a diplomat-expulsion deadline falling on Thursday, October 8.
