Top World News — October 9, Evening

Here are the biggest world stories from today, October 9, 2026 — the Nobel Peace Prize announcement, the latest on the US–Iran standoff, and a quick look at the markets.

Nobel Peace Prize 2026 goes to Navi Pillay

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, an 85-year-old South African jurist, for her life’s work to promote peace and international law. Pillay served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, and her landmark work at the Rwanda tribunal helped establish that rape and sexual violence can be prosecuted as genocide under international law. US President Donald Trump was passed over for the prize despite his strong public campaign, in which he claimed to have settled eight wars and warned the committee that denying him the award would be a “great discredit” to it.

Trump rejects Iran’s latest offer on Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has rejected Tehran’s latest offer to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters. Proposals had been exchanged through mediators in recent weeks, and Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran is reviewing the US response and will reply within days. Under the reported plan, the US would take steps in the first four to five days and navigation through the strait would resume on day six. Meanwhile, data from Kpler shows Iran has not loaded any crude oil for export since August 25, with only about 20 million barrels left on vessels outside the blockade — a small amount against global consumption of about 100 million barrels per day.

Market snapshot

Brent crude slipped about 1 percent to around $103 a barrel. Bitcoin traded around $80,400 to $80,600 after a $2.16 billion options expiry was completed, with $80,000 seen as the key level to hold. Ether held near $2,478. There was still no verified outcome from the China–EU talks in Beijing and no new tariff moves from China toward the US or UK. Investors now look to the US inflation report on October 14 and the Federal Reserve meeting on October 28.
