Welcome to your morning briefing. Today we cover the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, new US sanctions targeting Iran’s oil trade, the Hormuz confrontation ahead of the US midterms, the first proposed US federal framework for leveraged crypto trading, and the latest market numbers for Bitcoin and oil.
Nobel Prize in Literature 2026 goes to Anne Carson
The Swedish Academy has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson, honoring what it called her “bold and inventive” body of work and her creation of new forms for contemporary literature. The announcement was made on October 9. In the sciences, this year’s Chemistry prize went to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai, announced earlier this week.
US sanctions two Mumbai firms and five Indian nationals over Iran oil trade
The US Treasury has imposed fresh sanctions on two Mumbai-based firms and five Indian nationals accused of involvement in Iran’s oil trade. The move marks a clear escalation beyond the sanctions on 17 “shadow fleet” vessels announced the day before, tightening pressure on the networks moving Iranian oil and petrochemicals. The step adds further risk pressure to oil and freight routes through the Gulf region.
Iran and Houthis press Hormuz with new attacks ahead of US midterms
The Wall Street Journal reports that Iran and the Houthis are trying to regain the upper hand around the Strait of Hormuz with a new wave of attacks, aiming to break the current stalemate and increase oil-price pressure on US President Donald Trump before the November 3 midterm elections — while stopping short of a full confrontation they doubt they could win. US officials believe that holding off on a strike decision increases pressure on Tehran for concessions, including on its nuclear program. The analysis upgrades the previous day’s reporting on the attacks and Trump’s decision to decline Saudi requests for direct US military help.
US regulator proposes first unified federal framework for crypto trading
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission has issued proposed rules for cryptocurrency trading, planning a single unified federal regulatory framework focused on leveraged and margin trading for retail customers. Details of the scope and comment period have not yet been fully disclosed, and the move should be treated as a developing story. It is the first significant federal-level step toward regulating retail crypto leverage trading in the United States.
