Top World News — October 18, Evening

Sunday evening's top stories: a deadly explosion and fire at a Canadian military base, a stampede at a Kolkata festival pandal that killed 19, the UAE moving to rejoin the Yemen fight, and France sharply revising up its protest arrest figures. Crypto markets stayed flat while another stablecoin issuer announced it is winding down.

Deadly explosion and fire at Canadian military base

A fire broke out in the training area of Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, around 4pm local time on Saturday during a live-fire exercise. Multiple military sources told Global News that a live-fire round struck a gas line or gas well, causing an explosion. Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed there were fatalities and injuries but gave no official count; Global News reported at least 7 dead and dozens injured. The fire crossed the base perimeter in winds gusting to 100 km/h, the Wainwright hospital was described as "completely overwhelmed", and Edmonton hospitals went to Code Orange. The fire was held by 11pm local time with no evacuation order, and the RCMP is investigating.

Kolkata Durga Puja stampede kills 19

At least 19 people were killed and 25 injured in a stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday evening. A sudden downpour drove crowds to seek shelter, and a confusing microphone announcement warning that the pandal could collapse appears to have triggered panic and a rush. Seven people, mostly linked to the organising committee, were arrested, and a judicial probe was announced.

UAE to rejoin Yemen fight as Houthi strikes rattle Riyadh

The United Arab Emirates is moving to rejoin the Yemen fight after the Saudi-led coalition downed drones near Riyadh. The move follows Egypt's President Sisi asking parliament to approve support for Saudi Arabia, as Houthi strikes continue to pressure the kingdom's air defences.

France protest arrests revised sharply higher

France's interior minister Nunez revised Saturday's protest arrest figures sharply upward: more than 2,000 arrested, up from the 1,200 initially reported, with over 600 police, gendarmes and firefighters injured, provisionally. He said the state "will not yield" to disorder, after a weekend in which town halls were vandalised in Marseille and Lille and a 143-year-old town hall in Limoges was largely destroyed by fire.

Crypto: GYEN stablecoin winds down; NEON and SYND delisting time set

GMO-Z.com Trust, the issuer of the GYEN stablecoin, is winding the token down. Coinbase will convert all GYEN held on its platform to USDC between October 26 and 30, with no fees and no action needed from holders; GYEN sends and receives are disabled from October 26, and withdrawals will be disabled after the conversion, so holders should move to self-custody before then. Separately, the Coinbase delisting of NEON and SYND now has an exact time: trading is suspended around November 17 at 03:00 Beijing Time (November 16, 19:00 UTC), with NEON already limited to limit-only orders.

Market snapshot: BTC $81,523 (+0.02%, flat near $81.5k); ETH around $2,407 (flat). Oil futures are closed on Sunday — Friday's final settle was Brent December $109.86 (+3.7%, highest since May 19) and front-month WTI $101.41 (its first $100+ close in a month). Gold held near $4,164–4,165. No new China–US/UK tariff moves. Next markers: October 19 brings the Upbit Blast-network withdrawal stop and the Brazil 22-token re-report window; October 20 brings the Coinbase/Bybit Blast suspensions, Mumbai waiver talks and the Tampa meeting; October 26 starts the GYEN-to-USDC conversion.
