eBay to ban gift card sales in Australia and the US from November

eBay is moving to ban the sale of gift cards on its marketplace, with November deadlines reported for sellers in Australia and the United States. Seller news site Value Added Resource first reported the change on 15 October 2026, and Doctor of Credit confirmed that US sellers are receiving notice emails.

The ban is broad. The items that will no longer be allowed include collectable, empty, used, unactivated or expired gift cards, digital gift cards and gift card codes, eBay gift cards, gift certificates and vouchers with a monetary value, merchant and service gift cards, open-loop and prepaid payment products, and prepaid gaming cards. Fraud prevention appears to be the main reason behind the move.

This follows eBay's September decision to end Classified Ads outside vehicle categories, which already removed a listing route for some digital goods. Sellers who still have gift-card listings up should plan to sell them off or remove them before the deadlines hit, because affected listings are expected to be taken down once the ban takes effect.
